Pilates is a low impact exercise system that was founded by Joseph Pilates. Joseph devised his system whilst interning during the first world war with other German nationals and from there he progressed his technique further to help patients recover from injuries when he was working as an orderly in a hospital .

At the heart of the Pilates system is the core strengthening and overall lengthening and stretching of limbs, all of which help strengthen your body and improve the posture . This in turn, leads to better balance and flexibility, hence a great exercise system to help prevent injury.

Most other exercises involve a series of repetitive movements which can in turn put strain on your joints or muscles especially if accompanied by poor posture. Pilates helps improve your strength especially as the exercises are often focused on the very small and deeply located muscles which are less used in normal exercise but by improving their strength this in turn will protect and build the larger muscles.

Pilates is often quoted as the go to exercise to help rehabilitation post an injury as it considers the body as a whole, rather than just the area that you have injured. This offers several benefits from helping to regain both strength and control as well as addressing postural or muscle imbalances which may have been responsible for the initial injury.

In Pilates, the core is considered the centre of your body and the strength that you will derive from the exercise system will in turn help you to work on the alignment of both your pelvic and spinal muscles it's a win win all round perfect posture and optimal strength.
